Polar Bear Day a Huge Success!

Posted: 9th January 2012 by Admin in News

Canyon Lake Ski Club and Friends,

In addition to Bruce and Norma’s “World Famous Chili and Cheese Burgers”, the Beautiful Sunny day, Glassy Water and “unseasonably” nice weather for our Annual Polar Bear Day helped to draw one of the largest lists of participants and crowds we have seen in many years.

In total, we had 35 Skiers Brave the Cold Canyon Lake waters (not to mention all the family members and supporters who where there to provide encouragement or rub elbows with the brave skiers). Whether it was skis, wakeboards, skim boards, sky skis or bare feet, we saw it all. What was more impressive was the fact that we had 15 “First Timers”, including myself! Yes, even I purchased the starter package this year!  Also impressive was the number of Kids participating in this event. We had 11 skiers under 21! The youngest being the two 5 Year Olds Zane and Zachary Zander.

We will be posting many of the pictures to our web site.

For Braving the cold, each skier received a Polar Bear Patch to commemorate the ride and an optional long sleeve T-shirt was available for purchase as well.

I want to thank Bruce and Norma for heading up this Polar Bear Day event and cooking the food throughout the day. They both do such a great job pulling it all together.
I also want to thank Jay Fitzpatrick and Scott Mize for providing their boats and for John and Kim Whitlow for “manning the booth” throughout the event!

During the morning, a Staff Writer and Staff Photographer from our Local Newspaper, The Californian, came down to see what Canyon Lake Polar Bear Day was all about.
I have attached the article that will be on the Front Page of today’s Californian Newspaper.

Our club is off to a Great start this year. Over 100 attended our Breakfast with Santa and now a huge turnout for Polar Bear Day!

Thanks to all the volunteers who are stepping up to make these events such a success!

Polar Bear Day 2012

Posted: 6th January 2012 by Admin in News

Canyon Lake Ski Club Members and Friends,

Polar Bear Day is almost Here!! This Saturday, Jan 7th 9AM – 3PM, come down to Sunset Beach and take a ride around the Lake.

Ok, so there are no Icebergs floating in Canyon Lake, Thanks to our 80 degree weather. But the water is still cold!
So…If you can ski it, ride it or barefoot it. You’re welcome to join in the fun.

It will be $7 for ride and a 2012 Polar Bear Day patch! or $25 for a Ride, Shirt and Patch.

Bruce and Norma will also have their world famous Chili and Hot Dogs.
And, Weather permitting, we will have a nice warm fire to take the chill off when you get out of the water.

We Hope to See you this Saturday! Don’t Miss the Fun!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah & Happy New Year!

Ski Club Members, Future members and Friends,

Although the temperatures have dropped and the skiing has wound down for 2011, (Except for the Crazy Diehards!- who I hope to see at Polar Bear Day – Jan 7th) we have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

The ski club remains active throughout the year. Our board recently met to plan out our 2012.

But, first, I want to thank everyone for making 2011 Great! There have been so many from the club who have stepped up throughout the year to assist with our community events (incl. Fiesta Days & Learn to Ski), course/jump maintenance and pulling off our 4 sanctioned tournaments. I also want to thank the 2011 ski club board for their help and support.

I hope you will agree that 2012 is setting up to be another great year. We have already had a “HUGE” turnout to our annual Breakfast with Santa. Thanks again to Al, Bob Burns, Angie and all the elves for your help in making this year’s BWS a smashing success.

Polar Bear day is just around the corner.

I have attached our 2012 Club Calendar so that everyone can plan out the ski year. What we need now are volunteers to help make it ALL happen. Many of you may want to get involved with the club, but are unable to commit significant time. Here is a great opportunity to help with single event on a specific day. While we already have most of the chief volunteers in place with the 2012 water ski  tournaments, we still need lots of help with our other community events including area clean-up day, Awards dinner banquet, Fiesta Day ski show and the 3 Learn To Ski Days. If you would like to help out or even take the lead with one of these events, please drop me a note letting me know which event you could support.

Two Club events and Four AWSA Sanctioned Tournaments Scheduled for 2012: The Club will be hosting 2 Fun class – club events to get the ski season rolling, the first in March and one April. The March event will include Barefoot and slalom and April will add Sky Ski and Wake events to this “Memorial” event. The Club will also host 4 Premium sanctioned Water Ski tournaments during the 2012 Season. We will have the May Open, July Workers, Bob Barton (Sept), and the PB Challenge (Oct). The first 3 tournaments will have all 3 Events and the PB Challenge will offer Slalom and Jump. For those “slalom only” skiers out there (not sure who those people are), we will offer 3 rounds of slalom at every tournament. By creating this format, we hope to have something for everyone while sticking to our club goal of supporting and growing 3 Event Water Skiing. We also want to encourage new skier or novice participation, therefore, we will continue to offer a Novice division at each of our tournaments.

I hope that each of you have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays!
